The rapid transformation of the educational landscape requires Islamic Religious Education (PAI) to redefine its role in order to remain relevant amid ongoing modernization. The long-standing traditions that shape the identity of Islamic education are now confronted with new challenges brought by technological advancements, contemporary curricula, and the learning needs of digital-native generations. This study aims to describe how PAI can preserve its tradition while responding to modernization through a balanced integrative approach. Using a literature review method, the research examines reputable scholarly works that discuss pesantren dynamics, learning modernization, and curriculum transformation. The findings indicate that traditions such as adab, talaqqi, and classical text learning (kitab kuning) continue to serve as the moral and spiritual foundation of Islamic education, while digital technologies and modern learning models can enrich instructional processes without diminishing core values. The integration of both elements generates a hybrid learning model that is more adaptive, relevant, and firmly rooted in Islamic principles.
