Abstract

Contemporary Islamic Religious Education (IRE) faces the demand to shift from conventional teaching methods toward more participatory and studentcentered approaches. The inquiry method, with its various derivative models, offers a promising pedagogical alternative to enhance understanding, critical thinking skills, and student engagement. This article presents a systematic literature review concerning the application of the inquiry method in the context of IRE. The analysis is based on key findings covering the main principles supporting the inquiry method, its impact on student engagement, and the challenges and opportunities in its implementation. The synthesis of findings shows that models such as Guided Inquiry Learning (GIL), ProblemBased Learning (PBL), and the Community of Philosophical Inquiry (COPI) significantly improve the understanding of Islamic concepts, critical thinking abilities, and character development. Nevertheless, the success of its implementation faces challenges such as the need for curriculum integration and educator training. This article concludes that the inquiry method holds great potential for revitalizing IRE, making it more relevant and responsive to the challenges of the times, including in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
